The ranking question, answered honestly
Almost every visa checklist — Schengen, UK, USA, Canada, Australia — asks for proof of travel arrangements: a document showing when you intend to arrive, where you will go, and when you will leave. Many first-time applicants read that as "buy a ticket". It isn't, and several consulates say so in writing. Irish and multiple Schengen missions explicitly advise applicants not to purchase airfare until a visa has been granted.
The reason is simple: a visa decision is never guaranteed. If you spend R15 000 on a non-refundable fare and your application is refused, delayed past your travel date, or returned for corrections, that money is at risk. Consulates do not want applicants taking financial losses on the strength of an application, and a purchased ticket earns you no extra credit with the officer assessing your file.
What the officer actually evaluates is coherence. Do your flight dates match the leave letter from your employer? Does your accommodation booking cover the same window? Does your travel insurance start on the day you land?
